The Byke Project 2012

Over the past couple of years the Byke Project has been on hiatus. Since it’s inception over 10 years ago, the project has worked to help many communities and children/teens through the use of bikes and bicycle events. Our very first event was in conjunction with an outreach taking place in a large Spring Branch Apt complex. We showed up with a small tent, minimal bike repair tools and a huge line of kids waiting to have their broken bikes repaired. We spent hours working on bikes and the end result was being able to watch these kids have fun on their “new” bikes all over the complex.

We have regrouped and officially setting ourselves up as a 501c3 non-profit charity. We will be able to do more and help more young people and other non-profits. In 2011 we worked to raise money for the Houston Area Women’s Center through a group bike ride called The SleyRide. That event was able to draw in over 60 riders and it helped raise $500 for the center. These funds allowed the center to help a woman and her children for approximately 2 weeks! The SleyRide will take place again in 2012 on the weekend of December 1st.

With all this said, we’re making moves with the Byke Project and our schedule is already filling up for 2012. Here is what we have planned so far:

June 2 – 3: the Byke Project and Fiksd Apparel will tentatively be hosting a bmx event within the Free Press SummerFest event in Houston. We’re still in talks with them about this event and hope to organize a full bmx street or ramp competition.

June 9: The Byke Project and Fiksd will be in New Orleans for the Flatland Voodoo Jam, hosted by Scott Obrien and Pro Flatlander Terry Adams. We helped sponsor this event with a new event website and other branding collateral through Neue Creative.

June 18 – 22: Christine and I are traveling to Haiti with Coreluv to see how we can help put new bikes into the hands of every kid possible, as well as help serve and give of our time to this great organization.

August 2012: Working on plans to revive the Elevation Flatland series. This event would be #6, with number 5 being the last one we’ve hosted back in 2006. More details to come.

December 1: The SleyRide 2012 will take place, which will benefit the Houston Area Women’s Center once again. We hope to raise a few thousand dollars this year. You can get more details at www.thesleyride.com

Lafayette Project – December 4th.

The Byke Project was contacted recently by SurgeFest, a large music festival that takes place once a year in Lafayette, LA. They’ve asked us to come to their city and help give back to a needy community and help them serve the people of that city. We’ll be taking a small team of riders and volunteers to give back on December 4, 2010.

We’re looking for flatland bmx riders and other types of riders that would be interested in donating some time to the cause. We’ll be repairing bicycles for free that day to needy kids and teenagers as well as performing freestyle demos and working with a local ministry and SurgeFest.
